Singapore takes steps to reduce e-waste

2021-8-11

The"Old Electronic Product Recycling Program"jointly launched by the Singapore Technology Business Association and the Institute of Social Enterprise Sustainable Living was launched online recently. The event lasts for 6 months and is held in a combination of online and offline methods, aimed at raising public awareness of environmental protection and coping with the increasingly serious problem of e-waste.

During the event, the organizer launched a live event to demonstrate how to repair different types of electronic products, and released a series of popular science videos introducing electronic product parts and materials on social media. The organizer also designed an interactive session, inviting the public to upgrade or repair waste electronic products, and the winner will receive a cash reward. The physical electronic product repair station will also be completed in a few months.

E-waste hides huge health and environmental risks.According to statistics,Singapore generates more than 60,000 tons of e-waste each year, but the recycling rate of e-waste has not been high.In 2020,the amount of e-waste recycled is only 1,400 tons.Swami Nathan, the founder of the Institute for Sustainable Living, said:"The public must be educated on how to deal with end-of-life products and encourage them to extend the life of the products through repair and reuse."

Since July this year,Singapore’s e-waste management system has been officially launched.According to the"Extended Manufacturer"s Responsibility"framework,Singapore requires manufacturers or importers to be responsible for recycling and disposing of waste from these regulated electrical and electronic products. If the supply of regulated electronic products exceeds a certain weight,it is necessary to bear the cost of recycling;the higher the market share it occupies, the more fees need to be paid. The government has also cooperated with the German environmental protection group Eurogreen to set up recycling points and recycling bins across the country to recycle related electronic products.

At present,in some public places such as supermarkets, shopping malls, and community clubs in Singapore, white recycling bins dedicated to recycling electronic waste such as batteries, printers, mobile phones, and computers can be seen everywhere. The public can download the mobile phone application, scan the QR code on the recycling bin, upload the e-junk photos that will be thrown in,and earn points. These points can be redeemed into vouchers, which can be used to pay for online ride-hailing,takeaway,bike sharing and other expenses. The application can also help users locate nearby electronic trash cans, view recent recycling activities, and more.

Oulvbao Group will also cooperate with the municipal councils in Singapore to organize e-waste recycling activities in the community every quarter, and send the collected e-waste to licensed e-waste recyclers for processing and reuse.

Electronic product retailers also play an important role in e-waste management in Singapore. The government stipulates that electronics retailers with an area of300 square meters or more must set up recycling points in stores. After people buy new electronic products,no matter what brand the old products are and where they are purchased, they can be handed over to retail outlets for recycling.
